Borrani Motorcycle Rims Are Here!

Borrani Americas is excited to announce the re-introduction of motorcycle wheels to the market.

Ruote Borrani Factory – Milan, Italy

April 12, 1922 is a historic date for the motorcycle industry. On this date Carlo Borrani brought the Rudge-Witworth International Patent to the historic site at Ugo Bassi Street in Milan to begin production of their aluminum motorcycle rims. Over the next fifty years these Borrani wire wheels equipped the most prestigious road and racing motorcycles worldwide.

With the “H profile”, better known as the Serie Record/14, Borrani set new standards for the motorcycle road and racing industry. This new product introduced to the market provided unrivaled strength, lightness and precision. The quality of Borrani’s aluminum wire wheels are a result of their attention to the most intricate details. This is seen in Borrani’s choice of the light-alloy aluminum used, the precision welding, drilling tailored to the types of wheel hubs and the hand finishing of every rim. For many years these details are what made Borrani wire wheels the unavoidable choice of factories of the most prestigious models of road and racing motorcycles.

Borrani’s history and success can be traced back to the world’s most notorious racers including the invincible Moto Guzzi of Stanley Woods and Omobono Tenni (the first non-English winner at the 1937 Tourist Trophy), the mighty Gilera of Libero Liberati and Bob Mc Intyre (undisputed rulers of the 1957 500cc class World Championship), the thirty-seven World Championships won by MV Agusta with Giacomo Agostini and other unforgettable champions.

From Moto Morini Settebello to the Aermacchi Ala d’Oro, from Ducati 750SS to Laverda 750SFC, from Moto Guzzi Falcone Sport to the Gilera Saturno Piuma.

What would all these motorcycles have been without a pair of Borrani Record rims?

Borrani motorcycle wheels are supplied dimpled or drilled with three standard types of drilling.

Drilling of a Borrani Motorcycle Hoop

•  Disc brake hubs or little drum brake hubs up to a race dia. of 100mm

•  Medium drum brake hubs up to a race dia. of 180mm

•  Big drum brake hubs up to a race dia. of 230mm

One of the distinctive elements of a Borrani Record light alloy rim is the stamping which is imprinted by hand and includes the rim specifications.

Note: Historic stamping is available for new rims produced through our custom department. This is an important feature for concours events.

Borrani Wire Wheel cleaning products

Maintaining your Borrani Wire Wheels doesn’t have to be a chore. Use the products the experts use in their shops and for concours events.

All too often the first thing we hear from people is how beautiful Borrani wire wheels are but how difficult they must be to clean.  We’ve been at this for such a long time that we sometimes forget many of you are just beginning to learn how to take care of your famed wire wheels. Let us save you some time and frustration. For 90 years Borrani has been building and cleaning wire wheels and now has available to you the same wash and wax formula used by Borrani Americas and by top restoration shops across the nation.

To really see a difference in your wire wheels we recommend both a wash and wax solution. The wash, Reveal,  is a specialized formula that lifts dirt and sheets it away but is still gentle enough to use on both classic and new Borrani Wheels. Borrani’s Reveal wheel wash also lessons the likelihood of water spots. To help in the cleaning process we tested a number of brushes and have made available our top recommendation. This brush reaches in between spokes to easily remove dirt and has a vinyl-coated wire stem to reach hard places and protect the wheel from scratches. To protect the integrity and beauty of your Borrani rim we also recommend a wax solution…Radiance. This formula will help prevent brake dust adhesion and pitting. This specially designed formula protects the metal to help keep your wire wheels cleaner, longer.

The famed red hand can also be found on clothing, mugs and hammers. Whether you want to clean and protect your rims, buy a knock-off as a paperweight or proudly wear the Borrani name we can help.

Ferrari and Borrani, a Winning Combination

This post was submitted by Veloce Today and written by Pete Vack. Veloce Today is an online magazine for FRENCH & ITALIAN classic car enthusiasts! You can check their magazine out at

For over fifty years the cars Enzo Ferrari drove, prepared and later constructed were equipped with the beautiful, functional and strong wire wheels made by Carlo Borrani’s company in Milan. From Grand Prix cars to Le Mans endurance racers to cars for kings, Borrani wheels were a highly visible part of the overall design. Wheels are one of the rare components of a car that must be constructed with beauty, function, safety and performance; Borrani did it best.

Ferrari was a faithful Borrani customer; according to Borrani the alliance began in 1924 when Enzo Ferrari won the Acerbo Cup in Pescara with an Alfa Romeo RL TF equipped with Rudge-Whitworth Milano wheels. Although Ferrrari began racing in 1918, Borrani, founded in only 1922, was probably not the wheel of choice for Alfa Romeo until 1924.

What Makes Borrani Wheels So Special?

Borrani Wire Wheels

A blueprint of a classic Borrani wire wheel

With a heritage and history dating back to 1922, Ruote Borrani is the famous manufacturer of the “True Tangential” wire wheel. With their unique patterns Borrani wheels can withstand the rigors of racing and everyday use without needing to be trued.

The crisscross patterns of the spokes are not only for beauty but for functionality. Unlike other spoked wheels on the market and throughout history, Borrani’s famous pattern was designed for racing and thus designed to last. The precise angle of each spoke is designed to absorb a specific amount of pressure and side forces from both the car and road. Because they are angled and tangential the vertical and side pressures are lessened by the time the impact reaches the end of the spoke which in turn dissipates it like a shock absorber. Therefore the pressure taken is displaced among the spokes and keeps them from become loose over time. Elasticity is its best feature along with the light rotating mass, thanks to the light-alloy rim.

Enzo Ferrari knew the importance of a well built and engineered wheel. After winning the Coppa Acerbo race in Pescara in 1924 with a set of Borrani’s, Enzo decided to secure Borrani as the official supplier for all the cars in his race team. Since then the Wheels of Victory have won eight Formula 1 World Championships and 7,482 car races worldwide.

Borrani wire wheels are still made by skilled artisans who have undergone special training that allows them to assemble each rim by hand. Each Borrani wheel is documented and signed off by the originator in a ledger. A process that has been performed since 1922.

Borrani’s are “Wired In True Passion”

A MINIs On The Dragon Recap

Minis stream into Fontana Village by the moment; the common theme is that every car is uncommon. Mini USA’s build and price website touts 500,000 different creative combinations…and they’re right. No two Minis are exactly the same, reflecting the unique style and personality of the owner. It’s a thrill to watch the cars come in; each Mini announces its arrival with a wonderful exhaust note as they roar up the hill toward the resort. The crowd of spectators grows as each one arrives, flashing by the large patio deck at the banquet hall. Yet the fun is just beginning as old friends reunite, new friendships are being forged and each car is a unique case study on how the owner has made their car better. This is why we are here, and why it did not matter how far we had to go.

Classic Mini or Mini series R50, R53, R56, et al…No matter which “R“ you are, the car’s design architecture and platform is the core strength in every Mini. The beauty of each car seen on the surface reaches throughout the entire chassis. The reason why it’s so easy to customize and personalize a Mini is because the car is great all the way through to the frame. Like an artist with a good canvas, the Mini owner has a palette of options available to enhance the aesthetic beauty that meets the eye.

Beyond model, color and graphics selection, perhaps the most widely chosen option is wheel choice. Mini has one of the largest selections of wheels for any model ever sold in America. After all, it was the classic Mini’s that started the trend in the first place. Remember the Mini-lites, Panasports, and BWA’s of the good old days? Wheel customization for the Mini owner has historic roots that have rolled forward into the current generation. There are nearly 200 choices in Mini wheels today, either OEM or in the aftermarket.

Owners know that wheel choice is especially important to define the image of their car, and their personality. More than anything else, it conveys a message back to the admirer about the purpose of the car and the personal taste of the driver. Looking through the 750 Minis, either on the show field or in the parking lot, the MOTD2012 event has brought out the entire spectrum of road wheels. Sure, there is a lot of visual froth for everyone, but every Mini here this weekend is going to meet “The Dragon”.

Yes, the fabled Dragon. The old serpent’s tail is a 321 turn ribbon of asphalt that tests every “car, chassis, tires, brakes, road wheels and every pilot who dares to enter her domain. So how is your driving skill? Will the Dragon smile or frown on your Mini? She can be your moment’s delight or in an instant become the devil’s daughter. Her courtesy is to rattle your nerves, stir up the contents of your glove box and rearrange what’s in the boot. My friends, she’s bent many a bonnet of the young gun hot shoe and the experienced professional. She’ll seduce you through 10 apexes in a row, but can you hold on to her for a half dozen more without a break? Better treat her like a gentleman! Open the door of that throttle or turbo boost properly because she seeks out your every weakness. The fabled Dragon demands respect; long on promises, short on forgiveness. She’s the ultimate test of street driving, and she grades on a curve. Let’s Motor!

The Dragon tries every car that dares to dance with her. The 11 mile road is more than just a diabolical two lane, it is a crucible of diagnostic testing; bringing out everything right and everything wrong about a car and its driver. The car becomes a rolling classroom, and those who enroll will find that a higher education can be costly. Traveling at speed on the Dragon requires a tuition payment of a better suspension, brakes, wheels, tires a well as developing driving skills. Like any good school, it’s a rounded education that rewards the well prepared and exposes weak spots for remedial instruction.

All Mini drivers brought well prepared cars, since that’s the way they come from Oxford. Consider it an excellent prep school, as the Mini already has best performance engineering as standard equipment in every model. It’s estimated that Mini’s flew over 3000 successful sorties on the Dragon over the long weekend. Photos can be seen at and then selecting the date of May 3rd , 4th or 5th. Considering the 750 Mini’s in attendance, the safe passage of all through the Dragon is a testament to the cars and the drivers who brought them down tail and back again. Bend the rules, rule the bends… the Mini way!

Throughout these several days, the Dragon experience was just one of dozens of memorable functions at MOTD2012. It is amazing that with so many cars on display, none were exactly alike. Mini owners take pride in making their car uniquely all their own. The Fontana Village resort became an incredible showcase for Mini creativity of aesthetic and performance enhancements. Bonnet to boot there were great modifications including engines, powertrain management, suspensions, brakes, road wheels, tires, seating, custom color schemes and graphics. The Mini is perhaps the best and most versatile canvas for owners to make their cars one of a kind.
Dozens of great vendors from new Mini dealers to decals, vendor row had it all. Take a tour of the vendor paddock:

Outside of winning races and concours awards, what makes Borrani rims different from other brands? Borrani’s metal spinning technology and the most capable manual skills gained over 80 years of wheel centering, balancing, and assembling could make the modern wire wheel possible. 64 stainless steel wires are beautifully woven into the design which is assembled by hand. Our rims are made with ALSi7 alloy low pressure cast aluminum for the absolute best in materials and durability.

When Sir Alec Issigonis designed the first Mini in 1959, Borrani had been already building the unique hand made rims for 37 years. The long history of Borrani includes some of world’s most famous drivers including Enzo Ferrari as early as 1924. Enzo won his first race on Borrani’s, and that tradition has continued when Mr. Ferrari insisted that Borrani be the rim of all his racing and road cars. Between 1946 and 1966, all Ferrari cars were equipped with Borrani wheels as original equipment. There is a long list of Borrani champion drivers including Tazio Nuvolari and Alberto Ascari. Borrani Wheels of Victory has won eight Formula 1 championships and 7482 racing victories. James Bond 007’s Aston Martin had Borranis as well as Steve McQueen and Mick Jaggar. These drivers selected Borrani over all others because they are the best. Join this elite group while making your Mini the very best it can be! E mail John Montgomery at or call 770-932-2380 for the show special price!

Thanks again to Barry Patascher and the MOTD2012 team! It was a great show! Every Mini owner took home a boot full of fond memories.

First Report from MINIs On The Dragon

Fontana, NC – is a remote hamlet nestled deep in the western North Carolina Mountains near the Tennessee state line. A pristine and secluded place, its natural beauty is preserved by the rugged wilderness of the terrain. The mountainous topography features majestic peaks, deep valleys and beautiful Fontana Lake; perhaps the most placid and tranquil body of water in the eastern United States. There is abundant natural wildlife, fish and game of all sorts; even the black bears call this place home. Yet they share the area with the children and grandchildren of America’s greatest generation, those who built America after the depression of the 1930’s. Old timers around here are quick to recall the historic national importance of this area. Fontana and the cluster of cabins at Fontana Village played an essential role in winning World War II, since this is the site of the enormous Fontana Dam and hydroelectric generator plant. This is where the power came that made the development of the first atomic bomb possible. Thousands of people once lived and worked here to build one of the America’s greatest arsenals of wartime structures- The mighty Fontana Dam.

Tremendous power was needed for the top secret atomic research center in nearby Oak Ridge Tennessee. The work site was of the highest government priority; the labor went on continuously 7 days a week. Fontana Village was dotted with small cabins, the seldom place of rest of the jobsite workers. Teams of skilled engineers carved an access road out of the deep forest in order to bring supplies and equipment into the area. The road had to be perfectly banked to allow heavy equipment to pass through the rugged mountains. It was a diabolically twisted and paved path that weaved its way to the Fontana Dam worksite. They eventually called it Route 129, the road we all came to know as “the Dragon!”

An overview shot makes it easy to see how fun this road is to drive!

The Mini Cooper is a landmark vehicle that traces its heritage all the back to 1959. Generations of car enthusiasts have enjoyed the Mini for its design and packaging genius, incredible handling and magnetically attractive personality. Mini owners define exactly what it is to be a real car enthusiast. Their Mini’s can do anything and be anything, mirroring the unique personalities of their owners. Mini owners have carved a path that others can only follow, just like the road to Fontana.

2012 marks a decade of Mini Cooper reunions at Fontana Village and the tenth anniversary show has a record number of Minis in attendance. Nearly 750 Minis are registered along with over 1300 guests. They are here to meet friends old and new, show their cars, but best of all, tame The Dragon of 321 turns in 11 miles that awaits in the surrounding hills. Borrani Americas is proud to support and display our incredible S-Ray rims to the dragon slayers.
